John McMurray with one of his too infrequent posts on fishing conservation, this one pointed at how certain interests with loud voices and bully pulpits can undercut anglers’ efforts as a conservation force.

I hate to say it, but this despicable behavior by supposed recreational anglers is not limited to the mid-Atlantic. It is just as dangerously pervasive in Florida. It’s an embarrassment. The similarity of this contingent of recreational anglers to the commercial fishery propaganda of the 1980s is extremely disturbing. Anyone who thinks the outcome of following these people down the wrong path will result in anything but collapsed fisheries, think again.
Aaron, I agree with you. It drives me crazy to listen to recreational anglers rail against commercial fisheries, only to look to increase the haul on the recreational side, or fight against measures meant to achieve sustainability. And, as John McMurray would tell you, the number of recreational anglers who selfishly disregard the regulations so they can fish the way THEY want to fish is alarming. The amount of poaching, taking of “shorts” or undersize fish, exceeding limits, and fishing out of season that goes on is appauling. I’ve heard the same thing happens in Florida especially for the heavily regulated snook. And there’s not enough funding for real enforcement. You wonder how much the regulations already in place would work if people actually adhered to them.
It’s really important for commercial fisheries and sportsmen to speak with a single voice when they can. On the west coast, so many of the fisheries issues are environmental — less upwelling on the coast causing shitty ocean conditions (i.e. no food), dams, bad logging practices that cause siltation and water quality degredation, mining practices, etc. The Pebble Mine issue is a great example.
