LONG ISLAND: Feds Approve Broadwater
March 21, 2008 by Pete McDonald
Sure, who wouldn’t want a giant liquified natural gas terminal in their home waters? With the supposed 80 safety checks we must be idiots to think anything could possibly go wrong and screw up Long Island Sound.

Sounds like bad news. We’ve got one proposed for us in the Pac NW. I’ll let my brother know about it — see if he wants to sign up for any save the world coalitions. Any fish groups in your area stand up to this?
I don’t know about fish groups per se, but there is a group called Save the Sound:

They tried to put one in here in Morehead City. Luckily it got voted down or whatever. The word is that they would have to give 1/4 mile clearance whenever a boat came in, our inlet is about 3/4 of a mile across so it would effectively close the whole area. Plus apparently if there is an “accident” at one of those places it approximates the bombing of Dresden or something like that. fight that thing dude.
I don’t want it either but than again what’s a kitchen without a 6 burner gas stove ,you can’t swim in your pool unless its heated . When the lights go out why light a candle when you have a 10KW gas operated generator for backup
I used to be able to catch blow fish when I was a kid .Go clamming any where .I used to hunt deer and rabbits .I could launch my boat and go duck hunting
Nobody in those Mc Mansions that surround me want their view obstructed .They all must think all that the energy they suck up when they are not there for 50 out of the 52 week in a year comes from OZ
There are just too many of us
The last time I took one of those energy test it said that if every one in the world cosumed as much energy as I do we would need 8.5 planets
One of my colleagues lives year-round in the Hamptons. He relates a story involving piping plovers–an endangered bird that nests on the beaches. He and a friend were walking on a beach path through a dune when a woman ran out to the deck of her mansion and screamed at them, “Careful walking through there, you could kill the plovers!”
To which my colleague shouted back, “Lady, you’ve got a 15,000 square foot house right on the dunes. Who’s done more to fuck up the plover habitat?”
She shut up and went back inside.
Shell’s Broadwater was approved. This is the first “floating” LNG terminal in the US. It’s a milestone for oil companies wanting to build terminals in estuaries and controversial areas.
It’s a scare precedent that will start a domino effect of similar projects across the country. This rulling is being carefully watched by oil execs everywhere.
