INTERVIEW: Tarpon Movie Guy Talks
Posted on July 24th, 2008
If you’ve gotten your hands on the Tarpon DVD, you’ve come to realize that it’s not really about Harrison, McGuane, and Brautigan so much, but mostly focuses on a bandana wearing dude as he poles the flats in search of poons. And you’ve probably figured out that he’s Guy de la Valdene, one of the film’s co-producers. But you might be asking, who exactly is this guy? Here’s your answer:
Read this great interview with Marshall Cutchin of Midcurrent.

I don’t know if you have watched the DVD, and yes Valdene is focused on, but the object of the film is A. conservation and B. the beauty and mystique of fishing for tarpon. Above and beyond that, whoever interviewed Valdene is an idiot. Valdene makes that interview, not the interviewer as his line of questioning is bland at best. Cheers.
I’ve watched the dvd many times over. Marshall Cutchin, as a former Key West fly fishing guide, is far from an idiot on the subject of tarpon and Key West culture. Valdene makes the interview, for sure, but isn’t that the point? The job of the interviewer is to ask questions and let the interviewee talk, and not get in the way.
Yes, I believe that is the interviewers job, however he could do a better job if he asked questions above the realm of the mundane. He himself may not be an idiot, I’ll trust your judgement, but his line of questioning I’ll deem idiotic at best.
