FLY-FISHING: Casting Physics
Posted on September 18th, 2008
An article in Discover Magazine about the science of casting.
“If you do it right,” Wulff says, “the fly shoots by your head like a bullet.”

“While other fishermen lazily dangle bait in the water, fly-fishers sweat over strategy and technique” Interesting comment. Being that I am not a fly fisher but do understand the pricipals behind it; I would say that is either an uninformed comment or prejudice toward other disciplines. I hope I am not sounding too sensitive but I have spent a lot of time perfecting my fishing skills and find it rather insensitive to make comments such as the above one.
Tight lines and screaming drags
Cheers
Fish Whisperer, some of the best anglers I know have never touched a fly rod. I would say they sweat over strategy and technique as much or more than anyone, so you’re right that it’s an uninformed comment.
Did you see the article about Bunker in the same issue?
Not yet but I will check it out asap
Only an insecure person makes comments like that – just enjoy the sport and enjoy the fact that you can get out and do it.
Hi Pete,
Just finished reading the blitz that was given to me for my birthday by
Lee Woltman of Hamilton and Colgate. I read it between trips and went
through a lot more pages once this fog settled in over Sakonnet and Westport. I wanted to send you an e-mail with a photo of Lee so if you have another address please forward it.
