Snook under the lights…..thats my game. I have spent many nights casting under the lights for snook and what ever else is in there. A very good time. Some call it cheating..I call it killer. Good post.
Right on. It’s such an awesome visual fly fishing experience.
PS: Nice catch!
Pete– where were you (general terms, of course)? I’m going to Tampa for a weekend in April… we should conspire for some fun down there…
East Coast.
I’d be down for some fishing in Tampa. It all depends on if I can swing it.
Nice pete! …. gotta love florida … round the clock fishing! … i love the snookin’ at night … ya know, i have heard of alot of guys catching tarpon under the lights too .. maybe its just where i have done most of my night (dock light) snookin’ (naples bay and venetian bay) .. but, i never seem to see any tarpon .. lots and lots of snook and jacks .. but never a tarpon? .. do you ever see the tarpon when night snookin? …
Jeremy,
I’ve never seen tarpon in the dock lights. Usually just snook, jacks, and lookdowns.
But have fished for tarpon at night, just not fly fishing. If you’re up for drifting crabs or shrimp, the night bite for tarpon can be great in inlets, passes, and around bridges.
Pete,
I fished the lights around Marco last Wed. with my friend Roger and yes…Yes, we cast to 5-foot Tarpon who didn’t eat but it was a thrill just the same. We boated a 26-incher and 3 other Snook…back home here in East Naples by 2AM.
Give a shout if you’re headed down this way…
Marsh
Marshall,
This news changes everything. Do you bring along a heavier rod?
I had a nine-weight T-3 with a clear intermediate sink.
I’m thinking at the moment I’m casting….”so, if one of those beasts strikes and I do hook up….Hell, I’ll just play him til he breaks me off”
Hooking them is it. Down here they all call it “jumping” Tarpon. In my mind, I don’t really need to “land” a big fish like that, too stressful on all of us. Play him asnd see if he’s got game.
Or, see if he jumps in the boat at me trying to knock me overboard.
I plan on doing some night snook fishing tonight down at the Fort Desoto piers, I need to get’em now before the season ends
