2009: Year of the Farm Pond

Last year I declared 2008 “The Year of the Carp.” That didn’t go so well for me. Catching one on fly is still a huge priority, but you can’t dedicate a year to the same thing for two terms consecutively, or something like that. So I’m adjusting my goals. The year 2009 will be, for Fishing Jones at least, The Year of the Farm Pond. I’m setting the modest target of fly fishing on ten different farm ponds throughout the calendar year. I’ve got two farm ponds in mind that should be easily attainable–they sit on the property of family friends–but the time has come for strategery in regards to the remaining eight. [Editor's Note: If you have or have access to a farm pond, I am accepting unsolicited invitations.]

The first thing to do is create a “Year of the Farm Pond” song list. Coming soon…

I don’t have access to any specific farm ponds around here, but if you still want to catch a carp, or any other roughfish for that matter, you’ve got an open invitation.

Thanks JP. The same applies if you find yourself in NYC metro or happen to be in Florida when I’m on the road down there. I’m thinking you’d be down for a roughfish expedition through the SF exurbs after peacocks, snakeheads, chichlids, and grass carp–and I could enlist my buddy who catches clown knifefish.

Farm ponds? Oh man, sounds like fun ;) Definitely sounds better that battling 7 foot seas plucking 20’s from the surf.

If you’re talking about 20 POUND stripers, I’ll take that any day. If you’re talking 20 INCH stripers, I’d rather face the snapping turtles than the seven footers.

Why don’t you run some sort of contest on the fin to win a lamiglas so I don’t have to break down and buy one?

    OK.

Just don’t involve math or I’ll have no chance of winning
