The skilful use of the pole is an absolute necessity in work in the Everglades. The Seminole hardly knows the use of a paddle; even on salt water he poles or sails around the coast. In the Everglades the paddle is useless, and if you break a pole and have not a second one with you, you are in a very bad plight indeed…
–Hugh Laussat Willoughby, Across The Everglades, 1898

Pitcher’s blurry
That’s just because I’m shaking because there’s a 100 pound poon off camera.
Shaking? Looks to me like you are mighty comfortable up there on that casting platform.
Isn’t that the skiff you reviewed a while back? What’s the draft on that thing, like a half-inch?!
(note to self – refrain from persistently calling Pete a lucky bastard)
I look comfortable? OK, it was a nine-pound baby.
Yeah, it’s the Seminole Flats Skiff and it draws about four inches. That pic is from back in July but I just finished reading “Across The Everglades” and the above quote made me think of this skiff. Great read for free on Google Books if you’re into old first person historical records.
I was supposed to be on that boat again last month but got blown out by a cold front and a stiff 25-30 wind.
“The skillful use of the pole is an absolute necessity in work in the Everglades. ” Hey what kind of website is this???
PS: if you can find the TYPO in Pete’s post email me and I’ll send you a Kiss Your Fish Tee Shirt
Hah. But it ain’t a typo on my end; that’s how it was written in the book back in 1898. Far be it for me to mess with history.

I should have known better! Oh well..
You can still give away the t-shirt
It was a lizard fish
That is one sweet looking rig. Looks like it has a tidy supply of horsepower behind it too.
I’ve already got a t-shirt myself, but at least we all know that Jason is probably at the strip club when he’s claiming to be out fishing. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
So The Fin is just a cover for a skin operation.
“Ok honey, see ya later I’m going fishing”
Awesome post .. and that rig is definately sweet! I like the front an back platforms too! I could be wrong .. but from the stuff I have done on flats boats in skinny water … you can NEVER be high enough because it seems like the higher you are the better and further you can SEE! .. Anyway, looks like a really interesting and effective way to fly fish the glades .. would love to experience it someday!
Let’s figure out a way to do it
