Fire One Up

Posted on May 29th, 2009

My buddy Ovi saw a guy from Atlantic Outfitters tying saltwater patterns at a Fishing Expo and curing the heads with a UV light. Ovi told me about it. All my flies have brown heads. This acrylic head gunk supposedly cures clear. I found a thread from 2006 started by Bob Popovics on Stripers Online, where the master tyer said this: As far as the cost goes, it probably is more expensive than epoxy but not that much. There is no waste since no mixing is involved. No excess on the mixing paper after the fly has been made. I apply the stuff directly from the syringe onto the fly, when I am satisfied with the shape and coverage, I light it up and…

Talking Blue Highway

Alaska’s Lynn Canal is actually a natural waterway, a breathtaking  fjord  that connects Juneau to the outside world. It is also at the epicenter of another Alaskan controversy, centered on the proposed Lynn Canal Highway Project. The plan is to extract 13 million cubic yards of rock from the canal’s eastern shoreline to run a 51 mile highway to the state capital. The road–which would be the only one into Juneau– would cross two river systems, 61 avalanche chutes, and acres of untouched wilderness. Not surprisingly, there is fierce opposition. Stephen Mick, a filmmaker from Austin, Texas, set out to shoot an adventure video with the sunglass maker Costa Del Mar and wound up making a documentary about this story. Here, Mick answers some…

Rolling Through Tweekerville

Posted on May 13th, 2009

Last month in a certain undisclosed small town in Central Florida, a fishing cohort and I went through a drive-thru. The kid in the window exposed his arm tats when he reached out with the food bag. He  had no teeth. My buddy opened up all the wrappers in the bag. “A tweeker touching your food can’t be good,” he said. Roll through enough rural areas in pursuit of fish and you’re bound to hit a tweeker town. A scraggly dude or two will be loitering near the gas pumps and they’re sizing you up, waiting to see if you forgot to hit the key fob on your way in to use the restroom. A tweeker might actually talk to you, try to seem…

Film Tour in Maine Equals Cornell '77?

Posted on May 11th, 2009

I missed the Fly Fishing Film Tour in NYC, read that in Indiana it was quite lame, and thought until now that the place to catch it had to be Austin, TX. But I may have to reconsider. On Thursday, June 4th the Tour is rolling through Portland, ME.  Flies and Fins is hosting it, with striper guide Eric Wallace as the point man, helped in no small part by Alex the Wildman. College Kid Ben, The Roughfisher, I’m sure Marshall DeMott, and all the cool kids will be there. I’d drive up myself if it wasn’t six hours away and I wasn’t leaving to go tarpon fishing the next day. The Portland crowd has less than a month to work it out and…
