Fly Fish Journal

Posted on October 31st, 2009

I wasn’t going to pay for it. I found the only copy in my local Barnes & Noble, barely visable in the “Sports” section of the news stand behind a misplaced rap magazine. I flipped open to an article called “Eden’s Tarpon” and couldn’t put the mag down after that. I read almost the whole thing just standing there. It has great photography, interesting writing, no top ten lists, no “look at me Ma, I’m fly fishing” articles, and even a solid Head reference. I was going to shelve it but then decided these guys need to get paid so they can keep doing it. $15. And thanks for the bluefish love.

The Winner of the Blogger’s Ditch Fishing Gear Contest is: Honky wins as per being the 31st comment, picked by Random Number Generator. BLOG PROFILE: Since it’s the weekend and we’re too tired to email some questions, this is what we may or may not know. Blanco’s been putting up sophomoric hilarity for some time now. The proprietor possibly works in a fly shop somewhere and probably doesn’t need any of this stuff but he gets it anyway. Yacht Club please send correspondence as to where to send this paraphernalia.

Hard at Work

Tosh Brown and I have been working on making an idea for a book project a reality. A “large format pictorial on fly-fishing the Northeast coast” won’t work without large format-worthy pictures. So we’re blasting our way through some of the fall run this week. We’re in the middle of fishing around New York Metro and surrounding salt, with Tosh working the lens.

STRIPED BASS: More Discouraging Numbers/Actions

Posted on October 24th, 2009

Stripers Forever sent out an email to its membership containing this graph* and the following statement: The graphic released with the MD DNR report depicts the numbers of striped bass spawned in the Chesapeake Bay. Since most stripers that migrate north and south along the coast are born in the Chesapeake Bay, the MD DNR graphic indicates how future runs of stripers along the Atlantic Coast will measure up. The outlook for the species is not an optimistic one.” In a second email Stripers Forever sent another note: “On Nov. 2nd the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission – ASMFC – will vote on a proposal to allow states with commercial quotas to transfer the quota that they did not report as caught one year…

Nature With(out) Man

Posted on October 23rd, 2009

My good friend JMC just had his first kid but he’s committed to staying in his Manhattan apartment. To him it’s either full on city or deep in the country. “None of this half ass suburbs stuff,” he likes to say. I live in the suburbs. Boring? At times. Too high a minivan-to-person ratio? Most definitely. But try as many do to manicure it to sterility perfection, nature creeps back in. On Monday a red tailed hawk took down a morning dove in my neighbor’s front yard. All that’s left are feathers mixed in with acorns and fallen oak leaves to rake. My other neighbor had a possum take residence in his trash can for two days. One mean son of a bitch. Me?…
