What many people overlook, and what I believe was part of the catalyst for Herbie and the Minnesota boys bringing some raw energy into the 1980 Olympic program was the stellar 1979 NCAA playoff run that Minnesota had. http://www.insidecollegehockey.com/6History/ncaa_79.htm

Anyone that caught Neal Broten’s amazing game winning goal against North Dakota to win the NCAA championship, knew those boys had the stuff to for something big in 1980.

Here’s the thing, and this is coming from a lifelong Rangers fan: the 1980 US hockey team did something that that will always rank in the pantheon of all time awesomeness. But what Ken Morrow did that year is beyond imagination. After winning the gold, he made a real contribution to winning the Cup. Yeah, he was pretty bad ass.

I remember those games clearly. I was 17 years old at the time and just about to graduate high school. Although I didn’t play much ice hockey, my friends and I did have a great street hockey team in our town, so we were really into watching the USA team play their hearts out. Cheering the USA team on was a great thing to be a part of! Thanks for posting this

@Joey, by the time you were old enough it was probably all pros by then.

@JP, my favorite player was Mark Johnson, but he was from Wisconsin. Ken Morrow was pretty bad ass, too.

I’ve yet to come across a game that even comes close to the magnitude of that victory. Likely in this modern age, we will never see a clash of the titans like that ever again.

Huzzah to the legend, the late Herb Brooks, Minnesota boys Broten, Ramsey, Baker, Christoff, Christian, Janaszak, Harrington, McClanahan, Strobel, Pavelich, Verchota, and of course Buzzy Schneider, and to all the other Americans on that team.

I was a product of the 80s so I was one of those unfortunate ones that missed this game. I have watched the movie but I am sure it wasn’t as cool as the real deal. I wanted to play on an olympic hockey team too pete.

even if you did watch it – and then, like me, not pay as much attention to the game against Sweden, because you knew the outcome was inevitable – this is a pretty excellent recounting of the whole story. probably a good time to bust it out for nostalgia’s sake, but that kind of victory really couldn’t happen again.
