STRIPED BASS: Poachers Caught in Connecticut

Posted on September 26th, 2008

Via Stripers Forever, this news report about a fisherman caught with $3,000 worth of poached striped bass. Poachers and anglers who keep illegal fish or ignore limits, even if for personal use rather than selling, offend me as much as anyone, because they weaken the argument that the recreational side will be the more responsible stewards. So don’t be that asshole who makes us look like we’re just as greedy and are only fighting for a larger piece of the pie to exploit. Like this guy: The fisherman, Sean Bradshaw, 44, of Pawcatuck, was charged with the landing and sale of striped bass without a commercial license, commercial fishing without a vessel permit, possession of untagged striped bass and the commercial sale of scup…

Hanna Just Wet

Posted on September 7th, 2008

When you watch the weather channel too much you start to think the remnants of a tropical storm are still behaving like a hurricane. You see neighbors taking deck chairs off their porches. NYC METRO: The Pelagics Are Here

Posted on August 4th, 2008

From Capt. Dave Azar’s weekly email reports: …The water from about 10 miles off the south Jersey coast is a beautiful cobalt blue, with temps in the mid to high 70′s.  Working our way along the 20 fathom line we did not have any tuna sightings but we did get to take advantage of the numerous mahi-mahi that have invaded the area.  Found our first one, a 3 pounder, while trolling around some lobster pots in about 100 feet of water.  After that we began chumming the lobster pots and found abundant small specimens…After catching a bunch of these “chicken” mahi we lucked upon a nicer (14-lb.) specimen hanging right under a lobster pot float…There have also been reports of bonito caught in our local area…It’s…
