Alaska’s Lynn Canal is actually a natural waterway, a breathtaking fjord that connects Juneau to the outside world. It is also at the epicenter of another Alaskan controversy, centered on the proposed Lynn Canal Highway Project. The plan is to extract 13 million cubic yards of rock from the canal’s eastern shoreline to run a 51 mile highway to the state capital. The road–which would be the only one into Juneau– would cross two river systems, 61 avalanche chutes, and acres of untouched wilderness. Not surprisingly, there is fierce opposition. Stephen Mick, a filmmaker from Austin, Texas, set out to shoot an adventure video with the sunglass maker Costa Del Mar and wound up making a documentary about this story. Here, Mick answers some…

This headline says it pretty well: Alaska Chooses Largest Gold Mine Over Clean Water So, you may say to yourself, we can’t address this on a local level, we’re not even remotely close to being residents of Alaska. But could this play out differently as part of the national political platform? After taking in your daily morning read of Buster Wants to Fish, you’ll quickly realize the answer is: Not A Chance.

You may run across this ad at some point in your perusals, and think to yourself, Hey the people who put this out must really care about the environment in Bristol Bay. They would never do anything to screw it up, right? As Bob Dylan once sang, “propaganda all is phony.” Go to the website of the pebblepartnership.com and find out what the originators are all about, extracting resources. They want you to be excited that they’re sitting on top of what “has the potential to be a world-class mine that will benefit all Alaskans for generations to come.” Sure… Here’s where an ad like this fits in the big scheme of believability: And here is our audio-visual editorial response…

The Sportsman’s Alliance for Alaska is auctioning off a motherload of stuff, from fishing trips to rods, reels, shades, gear, art…anything related to fly fishing that you can get your mitts on. The good thing is you can go decadent and spend way too much on fly fishing like you already do anyway, but this it’s time for a great cause: Stopping the Pebble Mine project in Bristol Bay, Alaska. New items will be available for auction every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday through June 18th.
