The Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery, the place responsible for introducing brown trout to the U.S., celebrated its 125th Anniversary this weekend. To celebrate, they threw a party and invited Joyce Dewitt, Erik Estrada, and Adam West. I’d give up 30 days of fly fishing to talk brook trout with Ponch.
A little looser than I’m used to but good stuff. If Dad will let me, I may just adopt it for trout ventures. I think he paid something like $16 for it back in the day, but I’ll have to double check.

Technically speaking, it’s a Flat Brett, and today I took him fishing. The real Brett is my eight-year-old nephew from Michigan, and he sent this artist’s rendering as part of his 2nd grade Flat Stanley Project, based on the children’s book. He has to mail it to a relative in a different State and have them take pictures at landmarks and doing interesting and worthwhile things. Today Flat Brett caught his first brown trout.

More trout could have been had today, but the rains made the river rise to higher than normal levels. Levels that made most of the accessible spots too deep to fish with the now-required hip waders. I’d been ok with the hipsters until I stepped deeper to get a better angle and took a dose of chilled water all the way down to the socks. At that moment, I truly regretted the ban on chest waders and felt soles on my river. I didn’t expect there to be any fishing to begin with, as the high water levels created a murky torrent in the river and turned the trails into swampland.
