FLORIDA: Horse Country Rambling

Posted on March 3rd, 2010

“The pie and cake is mine to take,” –Don Edwards, Saddle Tramp There is irony in the fact that some of my best opportunities to catch native wild freshwater fish exist in manmade drainage canals designed in part to turn what is naturally a swamp into solid ground. A berm about a half mile away cordons off the real wild, the swamp water flowing southerly over limestone bedrock. But the wild creeps into the sanitized despite the best efforts of developers and trappers. Alligators show up uninvited in golf course ponds and largemouth bass make their way into every reasonably oxygenated patch of freshwater. Out in horse country, miles away from the coast, the bass are the game. In the small canals inaccessible by…

The Unfortunate Result of Drinking on the Job

Posted on December 15th, 2009

Beer is good for the recreational activities depending on the hand eye. When engaged in darts or pool at the local establishment, calibrating the right amount of beverage can lead the recreationalist into a zone where the table’s geometry unlocks its code or the dart flies freely from the hand into the triple 20. It works in fly fishing as well, to a point. In cleaning out the detritus from the last season, I came across the broken rod from above. I used it to land the pictured bass over the summer. With the help of tall boys, I had the patience to endure the nonchalance of this fish as it repeatedly ignored my offerings. And, when it finally made a move, I had…

FLORIDA: Bass and a New Weird Species

Posted on October 18th, 2009

Going to high school reunions is a phenomenon we all must endure at some point, and so it was with my 20th down in Florida. I guess we had a hell of a class back in the day, as everyone who came back turned out to be pretty solid. I stayed at my buddy Z’s house out in horse country. When you live in horse country you can have cool wheels like a John Deere Gator that your friends can take to explore the resident fly water. Z also has a center console that he took offshore dolphin fishing on Friday morning. I didn’t get there until Friday evening. I had three phone calls from the boat by the time I landed. Which means…

Redemtion in Largemouth

Posted on July 20th, 2009

I’ve been with the family upstate. Today I decided to walk a remnant of the canal system and sight fish to carp. The casts fell into place in front of mudding grubbers but the carp shunned every offering. Humiliation forces the reconsideration of options; and the desperate idea of returning to the farm pond. But redemtion needed to come elsewhere, through a group of bass living under a bridge. They’re used to seeing shiners and worms and plastic ad nauseum and just don’t budge for much. But it’s easy enough to pull of the road and jump the guardrail and slide down the embankment. This bass came out of the shadow line and poked and poked and finally committed in a lazy inhalation of my…

FLORIDA: Little Hits, Big Misses, Wildlife

Posted on July 11th, 2008

The thermometer in the rental car read 86 degrees at 7 in the morning, so I knew the canals were going to boil.  So would anyone making the effort to walk them in search of fish. Peacocks like it hot, but I had a hard time getting anything but follows out of the bigger ones. A few little ones ripped the fly off its hinges. I had a surprise visit from this tiny bass at high noon. I also had several follows from always-elusive snakeheads, big ones, that did what they always do–patrol behind the fly until I run out of stripping room. Speaking of invasive species, I chased this iguana out of my parking space. The mud ducks would have none of it.…
