Announce to the world, “I have many leather bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahagony.” Shadow Country. We like Florida. We like stories about Ole Florida. We think Peter Mathiessen is top shelf. We loved this when it was Killing Mr. Watson, Lost Man’s River, and Bone By Bone.  We’re not even done with this yet and we think it’s the best book from 2008. Buy this book, dammit.

If you’ve gotten your hands on the Tarpon DVD, you’ve come to realize that it’s not really about Harrison, McGuane, and Brautigan so much, but mostly focuses on a bandana wearing dude as he poles the flats in search of poons. And you’ve probably figured out that he’s Guy de la Valdene, one of the film’s co-producers. But you might be asking, who exactly is this guy? Growing up in South Florida in the 80s, my friends and I had a certain romanticized idea of what Key West should be, one that never quite met reality when we took the trip down US 1 and hit the bridge from Boca Chica. But it did exist at one time, and that Key West is captured perfectly in Tarpon, the fantastic documentary made by UYA Films in 1973. Filmmaker Christian Odasso and producer Guy de la Valdene made the film to try and capture the vibe of tarpon fly anglers at a time when it was still generally a cult sport. In doing so they accomplished far more than creating fish porn, they encapsulated a cultural slice of Key West in the early 70s. Tarpon contains…
