Perch eat their own. They chase flies designed to look like small perch and flies designed to look like big perch. Flies intended, obviously, to catch fish that eat perch. No perch is safe, even amongst its own kind. They don’t fight worth a damn on rods heavier than a 2-weight but for a species lacking any and all moral distinction they taste exceptional fried in beer batter.

My buddy’s got a pond just across the way from his house. He rolls a canoe up a path and across the street and takes his son fishing for pickerel, bass, bluegill, sunnies…all the panfish a kid or repressed adolescent could want. We loaded into the canoe and paddled off our hangovers and the Slam breakfast, but all I got to show for it is this grainy picture of a little yellow perch. Hit like a sonofabitch, I tell you.

Some fish, like little dogs, aren’t aware of their size limitations in relation to their aggression. So they take on things they shouldn’t and get into some trouble for it sometimes. But all fun for me, nonetheless.
